Brazilian side Grêmio are still dreaming of signing Lucas Leiva from Liverpool. The interest has been reported since the start of the year, but it’s been hard for the club to show they have the resources to get the midfielder back.
Initially it was believed that Leiva’s contract was expiring this summer, but then the player himself confirmed there’s still one more season to go.
However, Brazil’s Zero Hora claim Liverpool will not charge for the signing and will allow Lucas to leave for free this window if he wants to.
The problem is the player has other offers to stay in Europe, and will consider all of them before making a decision.
Grêmio aren’t afraid of officially saying that Lucas Leiva is wanted, but they also can’t deny how difficult the signing is. Last weekend, after the match against Cruzeiro, vice-director Odorico Román spoke to journalists and said: “Lucas is a great player, it would be an impact signing. If there is a possibility in the financial conditions of Grêmio, and that also serves Lucas’ interest, it is possible that he may come.
“At this time, there is no negotiation. I talked to him a few days ago. At any moment we can make contact. He is also seeing the interest of other clubs. There is, yes, possibility of him coming. There is currently nothing in progress.”
This potential Liverpool transfer may drag on for a while longer yet.
