Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is a potential target for Barcelona as they seek out a replacement for Sergio Aguero in the January transfer window.
Aguero has been ruled out for at least three months after recently being diagnosed with a heart condition that will require an extensive period out of action.
It means Barcelona have been left short of options upfront as Martin Braithwaite is out also out injured and not expected to return until the end of December.
They plan to rectify that situation in January if they can and Manchester United’s Cavani is one of the names on their list, according to Sport.
The newspaper explains that the Catalan giants will not make any decisions until they have secured Xavi as their manager after sacking Ronald Koeman last week.
Cavani is on that list and the kind of ‘penalty area predator’ that the club need to get the goals flowing.
He’s out of contract with Manchester United at the end of the season and playing something of a reduced role after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.
That means it would not be ‘excessively expensive’ for Barcelona to bring him in, which is key as they only have around €20m to spend and that’s not taking into account the costs of sacking Koeman and hiring Xavi.
Indeed, there is a feeling the Uruguayan could be ‘one of the bargains of January’ in terms of the cost to sign him.
One major issue is his wages and Barcelona would need him to accept a ‘considerable salary reduction’ from what he earns at Manchester United.
Otherwise they’d be forced to juggle the finances to register him in La Liga, a process they went through with their summer signings and presumably don’t want to repeat.
