Earlier on Monday, we covered a report in Corriere dello Sport stating that Wilfried Gnonto ‘can leave on loan’ from Leeds United in January, with Lazio keen.

It was short of many important details, such as the stance from the Elland Road side, and the idea of him simply heading to Italy for a few months, even with an option to buy that had no guarantee of bringing in money, was a bit odd.

Gazzetta dello Sport rectify all this a bit later in the day with their own report on Lazio and their interest in the Leeds player.

It’s made very clear that the Elland Road side ‘want to get rid of him’ and would accept the idea of a loan, but only with an ‘obligation to buy’.

As things stand, Lazio are said to be ‘thinking about it’, because the prospect of signing a talented player like Gnonto, who is an Italy international to boot, could look very good for the Rome-based side.

All this will come as a bit of a eyebrow-raiser in England, as recent reports have suggested Leeds United are confident they can get Gnonto to sign a new contract, which goes against everything said in the report by Gazzetta dello Sport.

This also suggests there might be some intermediary work going on behind the scenes here, trying to create something out of nothing.

Either way, if they do sell him, they know they will make a profit on the €4.5m they signed him for from FC Zürich in September 2022.
