Thomas Tuchel’s potential arrival at Chelsea could hand them the advantage in the race to sign Dayot Upamecano.
That’s what SportBILD report today, explaining that Tuchel’s presence at Stamford Bridge could tempt Upamecano to head there from RB Leipzig.
Tuchel is expected to be announced as Frank Lampard’s replacement in the near future, having been named as the clear frontrunner for the position following Lampard’s sacking yesterday.
Should he arrive as expected, one of his priorities will be sorting out a defence that has continued to struggle this season despite the arrival of Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Edouard Mendy.
Getting him, though, was likely to prove difficult given nearly every big club in Europe is thought to be keen on his signature.
However, SportBILD explain that Tuchel gives Chelsea ‘very good cards’ in the poker battle for Upamecano’s signature.
They explain that the German had Upamecano on his list of potential signings at PSG and the Leipzig star was open to the move because his friends at the French club ‘raved’ about Tuchel.
Furthermore, Tuchel speaks fluent French, which would help Upamecano’s integration, and former teammate Timo Werner is already in London too.
Those are seen as advantages for Chelsea, who can also comfortably afford the asking price thanks to Roman Abramovich’s money.
Of course, it will take more than that to actually get Upamecano, but it seems, if Tuchel does arrive as expected, the cards are very much in their favour.
