Originally left out by Luis Enrique, Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella could get a second chance at making Spain’s World Cup squad in Qatar.

This is because José Gayà, who was chosen ahead of the Blues man, has picked up an injury and looks set to drop out the tournament.

That hasn’t been made official just yet, but El País in Spain are reporting the Valencia player ‘will miss the World Cup in Qatar, pending confirmation from FIFA’.

As things stand, Luis Enrique is ‘waiting for them to allow him to replace the player’, which is where the Chelsea summer signing comes in.

The 24-year-old was one of the purchases made by Todd Boehly after his acquisition of the Stamford Bridge side over the summer, spending €65.3m to bring him from Brighton & Hove Albion.

He was then able to reunited with Graham Potter when the manager was chosen to replace the sacked Thomas Tuchel.

Cucurella has made 18 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea to date, picking up two assists along the way, and while that wasn’t enough to convince Enrique to give him a chance to add to his one Spain cap, he might get another go at it.

As Gayà is set to ‘leave the national team’ after injuring himself in training ahead of his country’s friendly against Jordan, it’s then added that ‘the names of the Barcelona player Balde and Marcos Alonso and the Chelsea player, Cucurella, are on the table’ to replace him.

Following this news, the 24-year-old will undoubtedly be keeping his phone close to him, with just a few days before Spain play their first game of the tournament against Costa Rica on Wednesday, November 23rd.
