Chelsea ‘enquired’ about Ajax goalkeeper André Onana, with him confirming he will leave the Dutch club this summer.
The Blues are reportedly on the hunt for a new goalkeeper to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga, his inconsistent performances having been a regular topic of discussion since his arrival in a club-record deal in 2018.
Onana is one who has consistently been linked, with the Blues having had the opportunity to watch him twice in person when the two sides met in the Champions League earlier this year.
The Cameroon keeper’ has been impressing for Ajax for the past two seasons, and has eight clean sheets in 24 games in the Eredivisie this season.
One of those, his status, has already been made clear, with the goalkeeper declaring publicly that he intends to “to take a step” this summer.
Whether Chelsea make their move, though, is likely to be dependant on a number of factors, none more so than Kepa’s future.
If the Blues do want to replace him, they will need to find a buyer first, with him far too expensive a signing to be left sitting on the bench.
Reports elsewhere have indicated that it is proving to be a difficult task, meaning Onana may be left waiting a while before Frank Lampard and co can come calling.
