Tottenham made big efforts to sign Giovanni Lo Celso when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge of the Premier League club. Talks with Betis seemed never ending, but with both clubs wanting to find agreement they did so in the end, with an initial loan then turning into a permanent move.

During the talks with Betis for Lo Celso, Tottenham briefly turned their attention to Bruno Fernandes. Their derisory offer was later publicly mocked by the Lisbon club, and Spurs ended up paying more for the Argentine then they’d offered for Manchester United’s saviour.

Lo Celso has spent a big chunk of this season out injured, and there’s recently been rumours about a summer return to La Liga. Those claims didn’t seem especially strong, and Estadio Deportivo points out Spurs would likely have problems agreeing a sale in the summer.

The report explains Tottenham paid almost €50m to Betis, and ‘few can afford a similar expense’ in La Liga in the coming window. Added to that is Lo Celso’s fall from grace, with the 24-year-old not a major player for Jose Mourinho when he was fit.

Therefore, should the La Liga return claims turn into anything serious, Spurs will have to take a big loss on what they paid Betis for the player.
