Last month, Swiss club FC Wil 1900 confirmed Newcastle United star Fabian Schär has been added to their board of directors.

The centre-back came up through the ranks of FC Wil’s youth system and spent three seasons with their first team before leaving them for FC Basel in 2012.

Maurice Weber, the Swiss club’s president, has been speaking to Blick to give an insight into the agreement with the Newcastle player and the role he will have with them.

“He will work on the board of directors in the sporting area, where there’s also a sports commission with a president, sports director, CEO, head coach and assistant coach – Fabian will now join us there,” he said.

The 32-year-old agreed to join his former club’s board after receiving the green light from Eddie Howe’s side. This has been confirmed by the FC Wil president, who is pleased to have the Switzerland international as part of the club’s sporting committee.

“He is a unifying figure, grew up a stone’s throw from here, brings a lot to the table in terms of sports and networking. He clarified everything with Newcastle first,” Weber explained.

FC Wil are currently in the second division and Blick state they have struggled a lot in the last few decades, when they came close to going bankrupt on several occasions.
