Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Steven Alzate is taking the break imposed by Coronavirus to have surgery, his father has revealed.

Héctor Alzate has spoken to Colombia’s Gol Caracol this week, and explained the Seagulls are taking this time so the 21-year-old can recover more calmly.

“He’s doing well. However, they are going to take advantage of the fact that they don’t have football to do a little surgery, since he’s been suffering from pubalgia. That’s why in these months he hasn’t had many minutes of play”, Hector Alzate told Gol Caracol.

Alzate has 21 appearances for Brighton this season, and has been struggling more with this injury lately, having been left out of Brighton’s last game against Wolves.

His dad has also confirmed the date for the surgery and how long Alzate will stay out of action during this recovery: “They are going to do it on Wednesday and he’ll have between three and four weeks of disability. It’s a good time for them to do it.”

Still, Alzate’s father says the player has been fine in England, and is currently waiting for the Seagulls to give the squad further instructions.

“Steven is fine. Right now, at his house this week. Everything in England was also frozen. On Friday they receive instructions from the club again.”

Asked about how Premier League players have been reacting to the break, Hector Alzate says they all understand how necessary it is

“It’s something that must be done, everyone understands it, since the first thing is always health.”
