Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he ‘suffered and cried’ during his early days at the club as he struggled to adapt to life in England.

The Argentine youngster joined Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in an €8m deal back in January 2019 before spending the rest of that season with his former club.

He then spent a year developing on loan at Boca Juniors before returning to Brighton to fight for a first-team place.

That is something he has done successfully, establishing himself as a member of the first team squad under former manager Graham Potter and continuing to enjoy that status under his replacement Roberto de Zerbi.

He’s so far made 86 appearances for the club, scoring 13 and registering six assists, and is very much a first team star at this point, starting all 14 Premier League games this season.

Things are definitely going to plan for the 23-year-old, but he admits it was not easy getting to where he is today.

“It was not as easy as I imagined it would be,” he told Olympics.com.

“When I arrived, I realised that physically I was perhaps not at the level that the league needed and that the team needed me at.

“I enjoyed it a lot, although at times I also suffered and cried because I missed my family and friends. But I never gave up and I knew I had the ability to play here.”
