Brentford goalkeeper David Raya has reacted to comments from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp regarding his passing ability.
Raya was recently the star of the show as Liverpool met Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
The Spaniard was in fine form, with several impressive saves keeping Liverpool at bay and earning Brentford an impressive point against Jurgen Klopp’s side.
It was not the saves that earned Raya praise from the Liverpool boss after the game, though, but his passing, with him pinging numerous balls to players feet throughout the game as his side went long to beat the Reds’ pressing game.
That was a strategy that worked to great effect, with Klopp later saying Raya could play as a number ten, something he sees as a big compliment.
“It’s a compliment. The team needs me to be able to get the ball out from the back because of the way we play,” he told MARCA.
“It’s a natural thing. I’ve always felt comfortable on the ball, and we work on it every week with the goalkeeping coach.
“The manager wants me to be another attacking player so that I can have an extra element in getting the ball out wide, creating a chance with a long or short pass.”
Brentford’s return to the top flight of English football for the first time since 1947 has been a successful one so far.
They currently sit 9th in the table after six games, with two wins, three draws and just one defeat to their name.
They’ve already beaten Arsenal and taken a point from Liverpool, putting in impressive performances in both games and at times outplaying both sides.
Indeed their football is earning them widespread praise, and Raya certainly believes they’ve been a positive addition to the Premier League.
“We play attractive football, and we don’t shy away from it,” he added.
“Our style and approach make us a team to be liked. You have to know when to play, but we will always have chances, and we can hurt anyone. We are a breath of fresh air.”
