In dire need of signing midfielders this summer, Liverpool went all out and splashed the cash on Dominik Szoboszlai, then contracted to RB Leipzig.
The player’s talent was well-known, with other clubs also circling, which is why the Reds had to pay a premium to a club who aren’t necessarily in dire need of money.
Liverpool spent €70m on Szoboszlai, who has already repaid them with one great goal in four appearances so far, and his former teammate Willi Orban expected nothing less from the 22-year-old, as he revealed to Nemzeti Sport.
He said: “Football is like that, meaning that if an opportunity comes, you have to take it. It’s a big deal that he signed for a big club like Liverpool. Even though he changed teams and countries, he fit in and was accepted in no time. Let’s just say it didn’t surprise me. I know what a great guy he is.”
As well as Szoboszlai to Liverpool, the German side also sold Josko Gvardiol to Manchester City and Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea.
For Urban, there’s no doubt the changes ‘affected the team’, but he also trusted his club to replace them adequately, which he feels they have done and that has shown in their early season results.
