Belgian star Thomas Meunier has hit back at recent comments from Thibaut Courtois regarding the national set up, and defender Leicester City’s Wout Faes in the process.

The full-back has been speaking to RTBF, relayed by Voetbal Nieuws, regarding Courtois’ recent comments about who gets selected for the national team.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper currently finds himself in something of a war of words with Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco, who had claimed the stopper walked out of the squad six months ago after being overlooked for the captaincy.

The 31-year-old disputed that and claimed he actually left because of a knee problem but the matter was not left there, and Courtois has continued to be vocal on various matters relating to the international set up.

One of his more controversial moments saw him criticising Leicester City duo Wout Faes and Timothy Castagne, seemingly claiming that they suffered from a lack of mental toughness thanks to Leicester’s poor performances last season.

Meunier is having none of that, though, and doesn’t believe that who a player plays for makes any difference.

“Not everyone has the chance to play for Real,” it sounds significant.

“You can’t point the finger at those boys because they can’t choose to play for, say, Bayern? I think that’s silly. Those boys have always done well with the national team.

“Timothy and Wout are always the starting players. You can count on them. I don’t see what their club has to do with that.

“Thibaut is sure of himself, which is also why he plays for Real. He wears his heart on his sleeve. We are not going to change his character anymore.

“He’s always been like that, it’s not new to us. We’ve always accepted him like that. It’s the first time he’s caused trouble, if we can call it that. But can we really blame him for saying What is he thinking?”
