Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in signing Barcelona B midfielder Riqui Puig has been widely reported by the Catalan media. Sport earlier reported the 18-year-old is “close” to joining the north London club.
Puig’s contract with the Spanish champions will expire on June 30th, and today’s edition of Sport claims Ernesto Valverde has told Barcelona officials to try and prevent the midfielder from leaving the club as a free agent this summer.
When the first report of Tottenham’s interest in Puig came out, The Daily Star carried a story saying Barcelona will try to sign Spurs teenage star Reo Griffiths. The English outlet suggested the La Liga winners wanted to give Tottenham a ‘taste of their own medicine’.
Another Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo have looked into the report from the Daily Star. They claim that Barcelona have no interest in signing Griffiths from Tottenham. Though, in the report it days “Daily Mail”, we have found out the original report was from the Daily Star and not the Daily Mail.
Mundo Deportivo’s Miguel Rico, who appears to have good connections to the club and has a habit of getting denials of English claims, states: ‘Barca have denied the news.’
In fact, Griffiths himself has responded to a fan when asked about when he will “sign a pro contract” on Instagram live.
He replied (via Football.London): “I’ll be signing something soon, mate. Don’t you worry about that.”
