Tuesday’s edition of Marca reports Aston Villa tried to sign Atletico Madrid’s Geoffrey Kondogbia in a ‘last breath’ operation of the summer window.

It was a busy last week of the market, with multiple links seemingly coming from nowhere, and the dust is still settling on what happened as the window prepared to close.

The Spanish newspaper say they’ve found out that Aston Villa gave power to an agent, who Marca don’t name, to try and find out whether they could secure the midfielder before the deadline.

According to the report, it was considered too late to agree on the formalities of a deal, with Marca saying that most attempts as late as this one are doomed to failure.

The 29-year-old has played 108 La Liga minutes so far this season and it doesn’t look like he’ll be one of the key players for Diego Simeone. That could open the door to a January exit, especially given the midfielder’s contract expires in June 2024.

Whether Aston Villa return for the player remains to be seen.
