Having tried to sign Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus, Aston Villa saw their efforts scuppered by a late move from Tottenham.

However, still decided on signing a midfielder for Steven Gerrard, the Villans have looked closer to home, with Yves Bissouma, currently at Brighton & Hove Albion.

The news comes from Nabil Djellit, a journalist in France, who said Aston Villa are ‘putting a lot of pressure’ to try and sign the Mali international, with Tottenham also interested.

With just one and a half years left on his contract, Bissouma could end up being sold if the price is right, and is a player whom Steven Gerrard ‘adores’.

We’ll have to see if they can convince Graham Potter’s side to let the 25-year-old go, because prior to his involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations, he had been a regular starter for the Seagulls, who won’t want to weaken themselves midway through the season.
