Aston Villa ‘plan to grab’ Lyon striker Moussa Dembélé in the summer and have no intention of paying any ‘transfer compensation’ for him this month.

That’s according to Foot Mercato, who say Unai Emery and co are keen on the Frenchman, but only on a free transfer.

Villa recently allowed Danny Ings to join West Ham and, despite the signing of Jhon Duran, are short up front as a result.

They’ve been linked with Dembélé in the last couple of weeks, with his contract expiring in the summer and him potentially available on the cheap this month as a result.

Foot Mercato say Aston Villa are ‘keen on’ the striker but unless their position changes in the last few days of the transfer window, they don’t want to spend on him this month.

Instead, their intention is to wait until the summer and then make their move for him when he is available on a free transfer.

Why that is the case isn’t made clear but Aston Villa have already backed Unai Emery in this window with funds and did the same for Steven Gerrard and Dean Smith before that as well.

Perhaps then, they think their remaining money could be better spent this month than on a player who will be available on a free in a few months time.

That’s just us speculating but it would make sense and the belief in France at the moment is that there won’t be any move from Aston Villa for Dembélé this month.
