Belgian side Antwerp are eyeing up a move for out of favour Aston Villa defender Bjorn Engels this month.
That’s according to Walfoot, who say the Jupiler Pro League side are set to move in the transfer window after sorting out their managerial situation.
The club recently replaced Ivan Leko, who left the club to join Shanghai SIPG, with Frank Vercauteren, who was manager last season.
Now that appointment has been confirmed the club can move in the transfer window and his appointment is believed to be a show that the club has ‘ambitions’.
With this in mind, the club’s ‘leaders’ have turned their attention to the ‘complicated situation’ of Engels at Aston Villa.
The Belgian centre back has not played for Aston Villa since March 2020 and ‘must find a way out’ of Villa Park.
Antwerp are willing to offer him that as they want to strengthen their defence and it’s believed the club would be a ‘superb home base’ for the 26-year-old.
They would prefer a loan with an option to buy for around €3m, with it stated this deal ‘would be negotiated’ for Villa man.
That suggests they’re yet to open negotiations, but the idea is there, and this is one to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.
