Marten de Roon has been a constant figure in Atalanta’s starting lineup since returning to the club from Middlesbrough in 2017.

Gian Piero Gasperini took charge of the Serie A club in June 2016 and in his first transfer window, he sanctioned the midfielder’s sale to Boro.

Middlesbrough then secured a promotion to the Premier League under Aitor Karanka’s orders and paid £12m to acquire De Roon’s services in July 2016.

The Netherlands international made 35 appearances in his only season in England. Middlesbrough were relegated from the top division and the now 33-year-old returned to the Italian club on a permanent transfer in August 2017.

Tuesday’s edition of Libero explains De Roon has become irreplaceable for the Italian club’s manager.

At the weekend, the Dutchman scored in his side’s 4-0 crushing win over Juventus in Turin.

The newspaper states the former Middlesbrough man is crucial for Atalanta, both on and off the pitch. They discuss his importance for La Dea as he’s been averaging 40 games per season in all competitions.

De Roon has become a star for his club, and this wouldn’t have happened if Atalanta didn’t admit their mistake and bring him back from Middlesbrough.

Liberto state Gasperini’s side ‘wanted to remedy the mistake’ immediately, and are thrilled they managed to do so.
