Southampton have made an approach for the signing of Brazilian midfielder Wellington, according to reports from South America.

Outlet UOL says the Saints are one of the clubs who’ve been in touch with the player’s entourage lately.

Wellington is currently a free agent following the end of this contract with Athletico Paranense last week.

UOL reports that he’s currently training on his own in Rio de Janeiro while his agents analyse the offers he has to continue his career.

“We’re receiving many approaches for Wellington, we’ll decide soon”, said his representative Marcelo Robalino.

UOL adds that besides Southampton, the likes of Cruzeiro, Fluminense and Grêmio have all been interested in Wellington as well.

Something not reported by the outlet is the work permit issue.

Wellington is currently 29 and only played for the national team in a few games for the U-20 squad. However, what could give him a chance is that he’s featured in Copa Libertadores for Athletico in the past two years.
