Following so many rumours from the Portuguese media claiming Arsenal and other Premier League clubs are interested in Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres, we now get something from a different source about the Lions’ striker.

It’s Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt who share a story on the player’s future. As they wonder where he will play next, they invited Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio to talk about it.

Gyokeres has also been linked to Serie A sides recently, but instead of favouring those rumours, the reporter was actually very clear that England is a likelier destination for the player. That’s when Arsenal got a mention.

“They don’t want to pay so much for him. Only the Premier League clubs can afford him,” said Di Marzio.

“Chelsea and Arsenal can afford him and Arsenal want him because they need a striker.

“When players do so well in Portugal, the clubs there want to sell the players. They understand when the time is right. For Gyokeres, it is also the right time to leave and give England another chance after the move from Coventry.”

Sporting only spent €20m to sign Gyokeres from Coventry City last summer. Since his arrival in Lisbon, he’s scored 32 goals and contributed 11 assists in 35 appearances.

Since the Lions have him protected by a €100m release clause, they know they’ll be able to make some big money with his sale, especially after resisting the January offers.

Now it’s up to Arsenal to put up enough money to beat the competition to this signing.
