Since his debut for Sporting in 2015, Gelson Martins has been attracting lots of rumours. The player’s skills are something the Portuguese press are always highlighting, with these stories often including a mention of clubs who would like to sign him.
But after years of speculation, it was interesting to read in a story from August that, despite many reports, Liverpool are actually the only English club who have made contact for him.
That article ruled out many other rumours from the past, which included Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Now Gelson Martins’ agent has been speaking about the player’s future, as he talked to Catalan newspaper Sport before Sporting take on Barcelona for the Champions League. It’s a match Liverpool will likely be watching.
Asked if Barcelona are one of them, Ulisses said: “I know the people of Barça well, I know Robert well, and he will be at the Camp Nou tomorrow.”
The agent did not want to rule out a transfer, even though the player currently has a €60m release clause: “As a professional Gelson has to be ready to leave at any time or stay. He is a player of the national team and wants to win championships, clubs in Portugal have lower financial power and need to cash in with transfers or TV rights.”
So Ulisses Santos continues teasing with a transfer, even though it seems there aren’t any offers yet, and Liverpool would certainly be more than welcome to bid for him.
Gelson Martins has been doing pretty well this season, currently with six goals and six assists, and helping Sporting to share the top of the league table with Porto. But do Liverpool need a right winger right now?
