Iker Casillas will continue being linked with Newcastle United until the end of time, it’s just one of those things.
Sunday’s edition of Corrieo de Manha reports that Deportivo La Coruna and Newcastle remain ‘in the race’ to sign the former Real Madrid goalkeeper.
Newcastle have been linked with a string of goalkeepers over the past few months, but Casillas has always seemed an unlikely option given he’s 36 years of age and has a huge salary.
The Portuguese newspaper report Porto will allow Casillas to negotiate a move away now rather than waiting until when his contract ends in June. With Casillas now second choice at Porto, they want to get rid of his high wages, and it sounds like he could leave the club for nothing.
Whilst Porto will do what they can to help a deal, Casillas himself isn’t in a rush.
Corrieo de Manha quote the player’s agent Carlo Cutropia as telling them “Casillas stays in Porto until June.”
Newcastle United will surely have other options in the summer, and it still feels unlikely that Casillas will end up at St James’ Park, despite what the Portuguese press think.
