West Ham United star Edson Álvarez has moved to defend his younger international teammates, urging Mexicans to give them space to grow.
The midfielder has been speaking to TUDN, relayed by Record, about the current situation in the Mexican team.
El Tri find themselves in something of a difficult period that have been ‘dragging on for some time’ now, with fans and pundits alike unimpressed by what they’ve seen.
There’s been various ongoing debates around the team for a while, particularly ahead of this international break after veterans such as Raul Jimenez and Guillermo Ochoa were brought back into the picture after being removed by the previous management set up.
They’ve been facing the focus of criticism of late alongside their more experienced players such as West Ham star Edson Alvarez.
It seems he is less than impressed by that, though, or the consistent noise around the national team, and wants it changed moving forwards.
“It is a young group that needs confidence, and it is difficult to have confidence when there is a lot of noise outside,” the West Ham man is quoted as saying at a recent press conference.
“For me or for Raúl (Jiménez), for people with more experience we already have a previous process, but for ‘Cotorro’ (Bryan González) or Erik Lira who are in their first games, well imagine with what confidence they are going to play when there is all this noise outside.
“I would ask for them (the youngsters) patience, that is the key point, trust in our own, continue giving opportunities to the kids, both in the league and in the Mexican national team.”
