The big worry for clubs during international breaks is players coming back tired or injured. Few footballers want to reject national team call ups, especially when they face a fight for a place.
Maximilian Wöber is yet to make a Championship appearance this season for Leeds United, behind Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon in the pecking order for Daniel Farke.
Last week, ahead of Austria’s match against Slovenia, the defender suggested a calf injury was partly behind the reasons for that.
“Nothing major, but it should (needs to) heal properly this early in the season,” Wöber told the Austrian media. “I trained normally all last week, now it’s fine again.”
He did, however, share some concerns about the pitch his side were set to play on.
“The pitch opens up quite a bit, there are then proper furrows in it. That makes it a bit dangerous.”
Wöber played in the 1-1 draw, with him rated as one of the best performers, but it now appears he’s picked up a fitness issue.
Austria manager Ralf Rangnick has said, quoted by Kicker, that there’s a question mark over the Leeds United player’s fitness for tonight’s match against Norway.
There will obviously now be concern that it’s the calf injury flaring up again.
