Leeds United’s Chris Wood is of course an Elland Road favourite, but he’s just as crucial for his country. The 25 year old striker was the major goal threat for Garry Monk over the past season, finding the back of the net 27 times in the Championship.

That’s led to links to other clubs, and whilst a lot of those links look to be through assumption and groundless speculation, rather than genuine moves for the player, it’s of a course a worry for Leeds United.

What could give Leeds a boost is Wood’s profile in his own country. It was reported in New Zealand this week that Wood is set to captain New Zealand at the Confederations Cup in Russia.

West Ham’s Winston Reid continues to struggle with injury, and Wood has again been asked to step in. It’s a prestigious tournament running from June 17th to July 2nd, and Wood’s New Zealand are in Group A, along with Russia, Portugal, and Mexico.

New Zealand are doing all they can to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, and will face a crucial play-off in November. It’s not out of the question that the Kiwis qualify, and Wood leads them, given Reid’s injury issues and the Leeds United striker’s growing prominence.

Wood’s international importance could help Leeds keep him. Going to a Premier League club and sitting on the bench would hardly be the best way to prepare for New Zealand matches and tournaments.
