On June 26th, AS talked about Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García. A day later, Spanish journalist Gerard Romero said Arsenal want to sign him this summer.
The 23-year-old had to settle for a place on the bench for most of last season, and had to wait until March to make his first league appearance.
He kept 12 clean sheets and conceded 10 goals from 21 games and also played a key role in helping the club secure promotion to the top flight.
Andriy Lunin’s contract with the La Liga winners lasts until 2025 and if he were to leave, Los Blancos could consider signing García.
The newspaper adds Tottenham and Arsenal have also set their sights on the Spaniard, and the north London rivals probably won’t have to wait for a player to leave before making an approach for the Espanyol player.
García has a €25m release clause in his deal that expires in 2028, and the report claims he can only leave if the interested parties were to activate his clause.
There’s no indication so far if Spurs or Mikel Arteta’s side are willing to invest €25m on the goalkeeper, but it would be a lot for a back up option.
