Having come through the ranks at Anderlecht, you would imagine that Albert Sambi Lokonga would have been jumping at the chance to work with Vincent Kompany at Burnley, but that wasn’t the case.

The midfielder did have the chance to move to Turf Moor over the summer, but eventually ended up at Luton Town, where his appearances have been limited due to injuries.

He doesn’t regret the move, though, since he is happy with the Hatters, who are doing a bit better than Burnley after 15 games, as he explained in an interview with DH in Belgium.

He said: “Contacts began [with Burnley] at the end of last season. I was coming off the back of a difficult time with Crystal Palace and I asked for some time off to think things over. After that, we got back in touch. Burnley wanted to buy me, but I wasn’t too keen on that solution.

“We stayed in touch after that, but in the end [Kompany] bought other midfielders. I realised that there was no place for me in his squad, and he told me so. We were close, but it didn’t happen, and I’m very happy at Luton. There’s a good vibe. There’s a real enthusiasm for being in the Premier League, and it meant I didn’t have to move, so that’s an important comfort for a player.”

The 24-year-old has found life a bit tougher than expected in the Premier League since his arrival from Anderlecht, and perhaps a move to Burnley could have turned that around.

However, the midfielder clearly felt a permanent move, when he is currently contracted to a big club where he still feels he can get a place, wasn’t the right choice for him.

Only time will tell if his decision will be the right one, but, for now, he doesn’t have any regrets about turning down Burnley.
