Celtic are reportedly working on signing Benfica midfielder Paulo Bernardo.

Portuguese outlet Record today features a story claiming the Hoops currently ‘try’ to get the 21-year-old in the final days of the transfer window.

It’s said Celtic’s attempt is for a loan deal, and Benfica are trying to sort the situation out quickly.

Since the player was not in the Eagles’ plans for the season, it sounds like there’s a good chance Brendan Rodgers’ side could succeed.

Bernardo had already been loaned out in January this year, joining Paços de Ferreira. Despite making it to Benfica’s pre-season, he didn’t have any minutes, and as written by Record, it ‘became clear’ he’s not an option for manager Roger Schmidt.

For now, there are no details on whether Celtic would have a buying option over the player, or even if they’re paying a fee to get him on loan.

Paulo Bernardo has a contract with Benfica running until 2027, and is very well protected by a release clause worth €100m, which is usual for the Eagles’ youngsters.
