Mateo Mejia joined Sevilla in January after his exit from Manchester United and has just made his first team debut, with hype growing around the youngster and it now revealed that Leeds United wanted him first.
His debut against Athletic Club Bilbao came after he impressed for Sevilla’s reserves side. Further background about the forward has now emerged and ABC have looked at his arrival and progress since.
They state that the 21-year-old showed against Athletic that he isn’t intimidated by playing in the first-team and that fits in with his general character.
The report further states that while Victor Orta played a key role in bringing Mejia to Andalusia, he had first wanted him at Leeds United.
Orta had been monitoring the player since his time at Leeds United, but there’s no explanation over why he wasn’t able to secure him at that time.
At Sevilla, the departure of Isaac Romero helped Orta sign Mejia and execute something he couldn’t quite pull off at Elland Road. The player, it is believed, had six months remaining on his Red Devils contract in January and he asked United to terminate the deal, just so he could join Sevilla.
