Benfica manager Bruno Lage has laughed off rumours linking Kerem Aktürkoğlu to Manchester United, insisting he’s just a player in the spotlight at this moment in time.
CNN Portugal cover comments from the Benfica manager today after Manchester United were linked with the winger this week.
A report from Spain this week stated Manchester United were watching the 25-year-old closely after he made a flying start to life in Portugal with two goals and four assists in five games for Benfica to date.
That’s apparently put him on the radar for several clubs and Manchester United were one of them, with the report even mentioning talk of a potential €40m bid.
We poured plenty of cold water on that report, which came from Fichajes and seemed speculative at best, and we doubted give the wingers United already have on their books.
It seems at Benfica they’re taking a similar stance the rumours, with Lage essentially rubbishing them today when asked directly about the potential transfer during his press conference.
“Already? Nowadays, at the speed at which things happen, the good ones are the ones who won yesterday and the ones who scored the last goal,” he said.
“We have to realize that the most important thing is us. The main objective he has at the moment is to have a beautiful career with Benfica. It’s about being a consistent individual as you have demonstrated.”
Of course, if Aktürkoğlu continues to impress in Portugal then the transfer rumours will undoubtedly continue.
Portugal has been something of a staging ground for talent across Europe and there’s every chance he’ll end up at a big club if his current numbers continue.
For now, it seems Benfica are not concerned about the rumours or the possibility of Manchester United making a move in the near future.
