Ajax have abandoned a planned move for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke after being put off by the Seagulls’ asking price.
That’s according to De Telegraaf, who say the Dutch giants have decided to move for defender Jakov Medic over the Dutchman.
The newspaper explains that while Ajax are working hard to find a replacement for Jurrien Timber, with Josip Sutalo the one chosen, they also need a backup.
He was not the first choice at the club or for manager Maurice Steijn, though, with him and the club having looked at numerous candidates for the role. Brighton’s Van Hecke was one of them.
Indeed, Ajax had ‘set its sights’ on the former NAC Breda player but ultimately asking price was the ‘deciding factor’.
Brighton have put a price take in the ‘tens of millions’ on their player and that scared off Ajax, particularly director of football Sven Mislintat, who considered the figure ‘too much’ for a back up defender.
He has now prioritised a move for Medic instead, with Hecke seemingly set to stay at Brighton unless there is a dramatic change in opinion at Ajax.
