Benfica defender Victor Lindelof has finally renewed his contract with the club.

Back in January, when the Portuguese press said the transfer to Manchester United was done, it was also claimed he’d sign a new deal before making the move.

The player didn’t move, and the new contract was never officially announced, although several newspapers said it had been penned.

Over the weekend, the Portuguese club released their official financial report for the semester and announced that Lindelof has extended his deal for one more year. His contract now runs until 2021.

Now at least from Benfica’s point of view, the transfer to Manchester United could be ready. That is, if we believe what the reports from earlier this year said.

CapturarBut the most interesting thing is still not public. At the time the Manchester United links were strong, the reason for Lindelof to renew his deal was to raise his release clause from €30m to €60m. The report doesn’t mention it, though.

Manchester United keep watching every single Benfica league match this year and local newspapers keep saying the Red Devils make these trips to keep an eye both on Lindelof and Nelson Semedo.
