Liverpool have been urged to bolster their midfield by signing West Ham United’s Declan Rice in the summer.
The England international has less than 18 months left on his deal and the Hammers have an option to extend it further by a year.
Writing in his column for Sky Deutschland, Didi Hamann is of the belief the addition of the West Ham star to the Liverpool squad would vastly improve their midfield.
The Reds have struggled in all competitions this season. Their latest defeat came at the hands of Real Madrid at Anfield. They lost the game 5-2 despite taking a 2-0 lead.
Hamann believes Liverpool need to bring in reinforcements in the middle of the pitch and in defence. For the former, he has suggested the Merseyside club take Rice away from West Ham.
“Leading 2-0 at Anfield, the hottest stadium in Europe, and losing 2-5 in the end is uniquely bitter for Liverpool. Another magical European night from Real Madrid. They’re a notch up from last year, despite being the reigning champions. Their chance of winning the Champions League is even higher than a year ago,” he said.
“Liverpool are completely exhausted physically and mentally. This team urgently needs new players for big money. I don’t know if the owners are willing to do that and if not, I don’t know if the coach is still interested. But it can’t go on like this, at least not successfully.
“They’re pretty good up front, but midfield and defence need freshening up. I would absolutely buy Declan Rice from West Ham.”
Liverpool’s poor run has seen questions raised around Jürgen Klopp’s future at the club. The former Reds midfielder believes his compatriot will be the only one to decide whether he will continue at Anfield.
“Whether he still wants to and stays is probably only decided by Klopp alone. Don’t forget where the Reds were before he came along and what has happened since. Titles, reputation in Europe and the way of playing football have been in other spheres since then,” Hamann explained.
