At the start of this month, we covered claims made by Calciomercato.it that Tottenham Hotspur have ‘tested the ground’ for the transfer of Lorenzo Insigne.

It was also explained the 30-year-old’s future is ‘still open’ as he is not close to extending his contract with the Italian club. The forward’s deal with Napoli expires next June and he is unhappy with the renewal offer proposed by the Serie A side.

Journalist Fabio Santini appeared as a guest on 7 Gold’s program, Il Processo, where he revealed that Spurs are ‘on pole’ to sign the Italy international.

“The closest team to Lorenzo Insigne is Tottenham. Their executive, Fabio Paratici is courting him closely,” Area Napoli quoted Santini as saying.

“Aurelio De Laurentiis is not bothered, quite the contrary. The patron believes the English one could be the right solution because Il Magnifico would leave Italy and, consequently, would not join a rival Serie A club.”

The journalist further explained the north London club’s interest in the Italy international is driven by their manager, Antonio Conte, who is keen to have his compatriot at Spurs as early as possible.

“Antonio Conte is crazy about Lorenzo Insigne and would like the player as early as January… Lorenzo Insigne, of course, is flattered by the interest of both Conte and Tottenham, but he is undecided,” Santini explained.

“He would not want to break up with Napoli during the current season. There have been meetings with Inter and Juventus, but Tottenham is the club closest to the player.”

Insigne’s reluctance to signing a new deal with the Serie A side has had no impact on his playing time this season. He has made 18 appearances to his name in all competitions, in which the attacker has scored five goals and registered six assists.
