Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani has seen his playing time limited this season due to injuries and the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.

With a contract expiring in 2022, recent reports have talked about interest from Barcelona and South American clubs. The 34-year-old’s brother and agent, Walter Guglielmone, admitted they will listen to offers from elsewhere, if there is an interesting project.

Mundo Deportivo reported on Monday that the former Napoli star is keen to join the Catalan club, despite them dropping to the Europa League.

A ‘confidential’ report from Sport now claims the Uruguay international is the ‘chosen one’ by Xavi Hernández’s side to solve their goal crisis in the second half of the season.

It’s claimed Barca have already held talks with him and ‘everything would happen’, if United give him ‘letter of freedom’, most likely to leave the club as a free agent, in the coming weeks.

Cavani is currently struggling with a tendon injury and Barca are proceeding with caution to sign him in January. There is no doubt about his qualities, but at his age, the Spanish club ‘do not want to be wrong’ as ‘no mistake can be made’.

The South American is on a ‘millionaire salary’ and if Barcelona were to sign him, it will be for him to play rather than act as a squad option. Cavani is recovering from his injury and Xavi’s side are ‘very aware’ of the how his situation evolves.

If the player overcomes his fitness issues, then Barca could proceed for his signing. However, Sport explain ‘everything would be in the hands of United’ for a potential transfer in January.
