Sold to Brentford by Leeds United, Pontus Jansson has played a key part in the Bees’ rise in English football, playing 71 times for them during that time period.
He’s started every game in the Premier League so far, rested fully during the EFL Cup clashes, showing just how much Thomas Frank trusts him at the heart of his defence.
That being said, the 30-year-old’s contract at the Brentford Community Stadium is due to expire at the end of the season, and there is a very good chance he leaves on a free, potentially to return to Sweden.
For those who don’t know, Jansson started his career at Malmö FF in Sweden, where he stayed between 2006-2014 before heading to Torino on a free.
However, he has always had the idea of returning to his former club before the end of his career, with next year being an ideal time to do so.
The player was asked about this by Sydsvenskan in his home country, and was relayed by Aftonbladet.
He said: “The question always comes nowadays. However, there is no real answer, but at the moment, I have a contract for nine months and am free to talk to other clubs in three months. So Daniel Andersson (Malmö’s director of football) can deliver in such cases.
“One day, I will play for Malmö FF. The only promise I have given when I talked to him and Andreas Georgson is that when I come I will perform at the highest level. I’m not coming home to round off. It may sound like clichés, but it really is. When it happens, we will see, but I will probably be younger than 35. I can at least guarantee that”.
It appears that he might take one more contract, perhaps a short term one, with another club before heading back to Malmö, unless they make him an offer he finds adequate in the summer.
We’ll have to wait and see, but this could be the last few months Brentford fans see Jansson in their shirt.
