There’s some anger building in Belgium over the transfer of Wilfred Ndidi to Leicester City. Whilst it would be accepted that Genk would like to receive around £20m in total from Leicester, and Ndidi would like the chance of joining Claudio Ranieri’s men, the way things are going is causing controversy.

On Wednesday evening Genk face Charleroi away in a Belgian Cup quarter-final. Het Belang van Limburg explains that the cup is one of Genk’s main goals this season, and therefore they’d assume the club is completely concentrated on it and giving everything.

That doesn’t quite fit in with Ndidi travelling to have his Leicester City medical on Tuesday, in a deal which can only be fully completed when the transfer window opens.

Screen Shot 2016-12-13 at 12.11.22The Belgian newspaper contacted Genk, and CEO Patrick Janssens told them: “We communicate basically that a transfer has not yet been completed.”

Put to him if Ndidi’s trip to Leicester was therefore unauthorised, Janssens said: “Ndidi never does anything without the consent of the club.”

There’s anger that ‘financial interests take precedence over sport’, and by such a degree as to have the Leicester City medical now, when it’s not needed to be that way.

Should Genk lose their match to Charleroi then the controversy will only build. Any negativity around Genk right now will likely be pinned on the club rushing everything on the Ndidi deal, so keen are they to get the money.
