Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune is ‘about to land’ in Alava to complete his move to Alavés.
That’s according to AS, who say the defender will ‘sign a new contract’ at the Spanish club, indicating he will be making a permanent move there this summer.
Lejeune spent last season with Alavés and became a key player for them, so much so that they are keen to get him on a permanent basis this summer.
They have been working on that for a while, and the Newcastle man recently became their first choice as a return for fellow defender Ely was ruled out.
That would make little sense given his current deal runs out next year, so Newcastle would essentially be giving him away on a free a year early unless there was a stipulation in the agreement on a purchase price in future.
Either way, a deal of some sort was being worked on and AS now say the defender is ‘about to land’ in Spain before meeting with club officials to ‘sign a new contract’.
Those words imply heavily that he’ll be arriving on a permanent deal, although it isn’t explicitly stated by the newspaper at this point.
