Real Sociedad was considered to be a difficult draw for Manchester United in the Europa League, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side made the first leg look easy.
Winning 4-0, it could have been a bigger defeat for La Real, and the thrashing was covered widely in Spain, part of a greater worry regarding La Liga sides struggling in Europe.
The media close to Real Sociedad explained the team just couldn’t cope with the speed of United, and were blow away by that combined with the greater physical abilities of the Red Devils.
Imanol Alguacil is now sick of it.
The Basque club’s manager has held a Saturday press conference ahead of facing Alaves this weekend, and he’s of the opinion far too much has been of the result. He clearly doesn’t feel it was a surprise and he wants those commenting, and presumably criticising him, to be more realistic.
“If we want to be in Europe every year, what we have to do is get up, takes responsibility and show that it was a bad game… we are facing one of the best teams in the world, we believed we were going to be able to face them in our own way.”
He added that if people believed Real Sociedad were on the same level, or close to, Manchester United: “We are losing our minds.”
