Former AC Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia, who spent the last season at Chelsea as a reserve goalkeeper under Jose Mourinho, has been speaking to Italian website Calciomercato.

Amelia was asked about the criticism Mourinho has been facing at Manchester United lately, and the Italian goalkeeper believes he is still a ‘great manager’.

He said: “I knew him last year and is still a great manager. Manchester United is not an easy environment, many managers failed to replace Ferguson.”

The 34-year-old, who is without a club at the moment, insists Manchester United’s owners, who are based out of US, are not close to the club, and that’s an issue.

He added: “The club’s chiefs are not close to the team. They stay in the US and people know almost nothing about them. It will take time, but Mourinho will win with Manchester United too.”

Amelia failed to make a single appearance at Chelsea under Mourinho, and despite that it seems he is very fond of the Manchester United boss.

Manchester United are currently sixth in the standings, and eight points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho’s team host Arsenal on Saturday, and would certainly be hoping for a performance which can help put the doubts behind them.
