The past couple of days have seen a sudden flurry of articles around Europe regarding Memphis Depay and his future at Manchester United.

The Dutch winger has struggled to find his impressive PSV Eindhoven form since his big move money to Old Trafford, and his continuous exclusion from squads by José Mourinho could suggest his days in the north of England are coming to an end.

While a sale might be premature (he’s only 22, after all), a loan to a team where he would be a guaranteed starter might be the best option for him.

Yesterday, the options of Marseille and Lille presented themselves, and on Thursday, Corriere dello Sport report it’s AS Roma’s turn to consider a loan for the young winger.

The Italian newspaper report that, having only played 12 minutes in the Premier League so far, Depay could be an option to fill in for Mohamed Salah’s absence during the African Cup of Nations, a cause of great concern at the Serie A side.

They say United ‘seem open’ to letting him leave on loan, and Roma are evaluating the operation, with the possibility of a ‘large’ release clause for next June being added.

If given the opportunity to play for Marseille, Lille or Roma, choosing the Serie A club would seem like the wisest move if he wants exposure.

If he wants game time, on the other hand, Salah’s return from the ACN later on next year might provide an unwelcome obstacle.
