Carlos Zambrano has revealed he turned down a move to Liverpool because he didn’t want to break his word to then club Eintracht Frankfurt.
At the end of December, we covered an interview the defender, who has played in numerous countries including Germany, Greece and Ukraine, had given to Directvsports in which he revealed he had offers from Liverpool during his time at Frankfurt.
At the time he explained that Jürgen Klopp had contacted him about a move to Anfield but, he had promised the German side that he’d be staying.
Thus a move never happened, despite Liverpool being a ‘dream’ move for him. He’s now doubled down on that, admitting he regrets his decision.
“I was a stone’s throw away from playing in Liverpool,” he revealed on Instagram, relayed by Libero.
“These are decisions that you make, and then you regret them. My team-mates told me: ‘It’s Liverpool’, but I had to keep my word. Besides, I’m very fond of Frankfurt.”
The failure to secure the move certainly worked out better for Liverpool than it did Zambrano given how Matip has developed since his arrival.
After a shaky start, the defender is now well-thought-of at Anfield, with many placing him ahead of the competition for whom partners Virgil van Dijk.
Zambrano, on the other hand, has seen his career take him to the likes of Russia, Greece, Switzerland and Ukraine in search of first-team football that hasn’t come his way.
He’s now moved to Argentine with Boca Juniors, but it seems that potential move to Anfield, and his failure to grasp it with both hands, is one that will haunt him for quite a while.
