Praise for Paul Pogba is rare these days, so whenever it comes his way, it’s rather newsworthy.

The Manchester United midfielder’s display for France against the Netherlands was a stark improvement on that against Bulgaria, and people took notice.

One of those was former France striker Christophe Dugarry, now a radio show host at RMC Sport.

Speaking after the game, he said that despite all the comparisons with Zinedine Zidane, he saw the ex-Juventus player more as a Vieira type, who was ‘an ultra-intelligent player on the pitch’.

The former Arsenal icon used to make all the right decisions, when to pass first time, when to tackle, when to run, and Dugarry explained the Manchester United midfielder should ‘have more of that’.

Dugarry said: “Of course, in some games, he’ll be able to be a bit more creative, but I think that these days, his best position is in midfield. Not a bit higher, because it’s simpler for him when he has the game in front of him.

“The Pogba I saw against the Netherlands is the Pogba who can become Ballon d’Or, something he is hoping for.”

High praise for the 23-year-old, who has suffered a recent spate of strong criticism for underperforming under José Mourinho so far this season.

Time for him to now show if he can keep it up.
