Arsenal skipper Per Mertesacker is facing an uncertain future at the club, after the arrival of Skhodran Mustafi.
The 32-year-old suffered a knee injury before the start of the season, and that has ruled him out until December. Mertesacker’s contract at Arsenal expires in 2017, and there are no talks of a renewal yet.
Hannover 96’s managing director Martin Bader has been speaking to Bild, and confirmed their interest in the Arsenal star.
He said: “All I know is what Hannover means for Per, and maybe we can inspire him again to play for us.”
Hannover is Mertesacker’s birth place, and where he started his career before moving to Werder Bremen, but Bader insists it won’t be easy to bring Mertesacker back to the club.
He added: “The issue of Per Mertesacker is not currently high on our agenda. It’s obvious, because we are a second division side and he is the captain of Arsenal.
“A lot really has to come together so that a return is possible. The first requirement is that we get promoted.”
Hannover are currently second in the second division, and will be hoping to get promotion at the end of the season to have any chance of signing the German defender.
