Spain coach Luis Enrique rejected the chance to take over at Arsenal before making his return to the national side, according to claims from Spain.

Enrique returned as Spain’s coach this week, replacing Roberto Moreno, who had guided Spain to Euro 2020 qualification after Enrique stepped down in June this year.

The former Barcelona coach’s return has caused plenty of controversy and seen a very public falling out with Moreno over the affair.

But it seems he had an offer to head elsewhere before taking up his old job, confirming in his press conference yesterday that he’d received an offer from ‘a foreign club’.

OK Diario claim that club was Arsenal, who approached Enrique to replace under-fire manager Unai Emery.

Emery is under pressure with the Gunners sat 8th in the table and eight points outside the top four after 13 games of the season.

The website says they identified Enrique as an ideal replacement, and even offerred the 49-year-old a financial package that was ‘superior’ to the one on the table from Spain.

Enrique, though, turned down the chance after the first contact with the Spanish FA was made, leaving Arsenal to look elsewhere for their potential Emery replacement.
