Gaining prominence after it was announced Paulo Fonseca would be taking over at AS Roma, the idea that Manchester United’s Fred could team up with his former manager in Italy disappeared relatively quickly after that.
However, both Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere dello Sport bring it back up on Wednesday, as the struggles to sign Jordan Veretout from Fiorentina continue, with one a bit more upbeat about it than the other.
We’ll start with the bad news, as the latter of the pair explain the only way the Brazilian could swap Old Trafford for Italy’s capital is if Manchester United allowed him to do temporarily while paying a large chunk of his €5m/year wages.
As for Gazzetta, they simply state the idea of making a move for the former Shakhtar star is still being monitored, without placing any warnings about salary or transfer fees.
Considering the Brazil international has only spent a year in England, it might be a bit soon to write him off entirely, and it wouldn’t be surprising, especially with the lack of midfielders at his disposal these days, if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was willing to give him another chance for the 2019-20 campaign.
If things still aren’t working out come January, perhaps this is something everyone can revisit?
