Despite reported as being close to a move to Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United’s Ander Herrera still has the possibility of renewing his contract at Old Trafford, and has about three months to do so.
However, should he decide against doing so, either for financial or sporting purposes, there is one club other than the Ligue 1 champions who would welcome him with open arms: Athletic Bilbao.
Originally bought by the Red Devils from the La Liga side, the midfielder has never hidden his affinity for the club, but, unlike Fernando Llorente, it might be a bit early in his career to return there.
This isn’t stopping Bilbao’s president, Aitor Elezegi, from keeping his fingers crossed, as he explained to Tele Bilbao, relayed by AS on Tuesday.
He said, talking of Llorente, Herrera and Javi Martinez: “Any of those three could play in the team. Athletic has the ability to go through with these type of transfers. I hope Javi, Herrera or Llorente would like to make the effort, which would be a generous one.”
Revealing that, should the board be open to it, the Basque club could spend €20m on the Bayern Munich midfielder, the president made it clear they had enough resources to be attractive to their former players.
Whether that is appealing to the Manchester United midfielder right now, however, remains to be seen.
