Sent back to France after a fairly torrid time at Tottenham, Clinton N’Jié still hasn’t managed to find the consistency required to make it in the first-team at Marseille.
Barely used from the bench by Rudi Garcia, the Cameroon international has only made four appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal, the second in a 4-2 loss to his former club Lyon.
Since then, the winger has been out with a groin injury, keeping him off the field, where problems have also followed him, according to France 3.
The French media outlet reported on Thursday that the footballer was ‘arrested’ in the summer after his British driving licence, which was obtained during his time at Tottenham, was discovered to be a fake.
Immediately, the police thought the document looked suspicious, forcing them to send a few pictures to their specialist.
Not hearing back after a few minutes, and with fans gathering around the player’s car, they let N’Jié go.
Once he’d gone, they heard back from their specialist, who told them it was a ‘crude fake’, and the serial number wasn’t coming up on the British driver’s licence database.
Despite setting off after the player, the police weren’t able to find him.
Marseille have refused to comment on the matter, which they classify as ‘private’, while the player’s agent is said to have sent France 3 a snap of another document, presented as an international driving licence, but the outlet haven’t been able to immediately verify its authenticity.
If this manages to get proven, the player risks up to five years in prison and a €75000 fine.
France 3 have been informed the player is expected to soon be called in by the police, as the case is still ongoing.
