Last week, somewhat out of the blue, it was pushed in the French media that Tanguy Ndombélé, currently loaned out to Napoli by Tottenham, could make the World Cup.

This was due to the injury to Paul Pogba, who will miss the competition due to injury, and with a lack of logical replacements, the Spurs loanee was an option for Didier Deschamps.

However, the list on Wednesday night made it rather clear: the Tottenham man will not be travelling to Qatar.

Deschamps, instead, decided to opt for some other names, such as Jordan Veretout and Youssouf Fofana, perhaps both more deserving than the Napoli midfielder.

Still, L’Equipe did say last week that Ndombele was a serious contender for a spot in the squad, which might have given Ndombélé some hope.

In fact, La Repubblica state that the player ‘hoped for it until the end’, and despite him trying to ‘cross the finish line of the World Cup in extremis’, it wasn’t to be.

They add the Tottenham man ‘was thinking of returning to the national team due to the injury of Paul Pogba’, and his form for Napoli could have helped him do that.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, and Ndombélé will have to make do watching his compatriots from home, cheering them on from afar.
